Pumps for Brewery Spent Grain

A NEMO® Pump solved a variety of production problems for a small micro-brewery in Canada. The brewery produces an Amber Lager which has grown in popularity. To meet the growing demands, production of the quality lager was increased. The increase in production led to a review of the brewery’s processing system. Under this process, after each brew, the large lauter tun would be manually tilted to dump spent grain into a tote bin. The tote bin was then hoisted up to the second level of the plant where it was pushed along an overhead rail through the plant and office areas to the outside of the building and into an awaiting truck. This investigation revealed that the existing handling of spent grain was both time consuming and labor intensive. Realizing a change was in order, brewery personnel contacted a well-known OEM experienced with brewing and beverage handling systems. The OEM in turn contacted NETZSCH because of its experience with this type of application. Subsequently, a NEMO® Model 2NES60A progressing cavity pump was purchased and installed at the brewery. The resulting pump’s performance not only met but exceeded the brewery personnel’s expectations. The benefits the brewery has seen with the NEMO® Pump include:
  • Elimination of manual handling of spent grain.
  • Elimination of the associated mess and clean-up.
  • A clean, enclosed piping system resulting in less maintenance.
  • Improved production - more expedient removal of spent grain from the lauter tun.
  • Reduced labor costs.
  • Aesthetically pleasing - in a highly exposed and marketed micro-brewery plant.
  • No need to break down piping or remove tank tops on the lauter tun.
The success of this installation validates that NEMO® Progressing Cavity Pumps are ideal for microbrewery service as well as similar applications in larger breweries.
